Down & filling density

Down and feathers are a wonderful filling material for creating cozy, warm clothing.
However, they are also not unproblematic to use in production because

  1. They must be well washed and cleaned to remove the “duck smell” and biological infestation from the animals.
  2. At the same time, however, you must not degrease too much, otherwise the delicate down will break too easily and turn to dust.
Of course, this also reduces the heat storage capacity.

Disinfecting down is a very delicate subject for which there are various possible solutions. Talk to us!

  1. However, the lining is also very important in this process.
On the one hand, the down or polyester filling must not be able to escape through the weave, but on the other hand, the fabric must also be breathable, otherwise a lively “biotope” will develop in the down bags over time and the product cannot be cared for.

We can offer you finishes that significantly improve the fiber density of the lining or down bag by chemically roughening the weave and making it permanently denser with PUR or acrylic films on the fiber. But fillings made of polyester and other fibers are also coming closer and closer to the positive characteristics of a down filling. Overall, however, there are still usually significant differences in care when synthetic fillings are no longer (or can no longer be) evenly distributed in the upholstery after washing.
